Chapter Seven

Rory’s stomach twisted with apprehension during the drive to Dante’s house. He didn’t know what the hell he’d agreed to and although he wasn’t having second thoughts exactly, he was as nervous as hell. He’d loaded up Dante’s car with his personal belongings, but he hadn’t been able to find any clothes that still fit. It didn’t matter—he didn’t plan to stay in Dante’s house for long. He hoped that the situation with Dai’s pack would settle down soon so that he’d be able to go home. Rory’s car was still parked in the multi-storey in Swansea, but Dante had assured him he’d get one of his pack mates to collect it for him first thing in the morning. Rory hadn’t admitted it, but he liked the way Dante took charge and thought of everything. It made him feel protected and cared for. He hadn’t felt like that since before his parents had passed away.

Dante took the familiar road over the Bryn mountains—the same road Rory travelled on every day to get to his office. He usually loved driving this route. The scenery was spectacular and he always felt a sense of peace as he drove by the dense forestry. On this occasion however he felt twitchy and ill at ease. The sun had long since set and the moon cast an ethereal glow over the trees. It would be full soon and Rory would change. He shivered and tried to push the thought from his mind, but a horrible feeling of foreboding rolled over him in waves—a sensation that was exacerbated when Dante slammed the car into third gear and accelerated up the hill, past Maesteg golf course.

“Hang tight,” Dante instructed. “We’ve got a tail.”

“A what?” Fear sent Rory’s pulse soaring as he turned to look over his shoulder and saw a black SUV overtaking a slow moving Fiesta. It was gaining on them. “Is it Dai?”

“More likely some of his henchmen. They’ve been following us since we left. They must have been parked in your street somewhere, watching the flat and waiting for you to come out.”

Dante reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his mobile phone. He punched in a number then put the call on speaker.

“Alpha,” a deep, gravelly voice answered.

Dante floored the accelerator. “Bram, you still over at my place?”

“Sure am. What’s up?”

“Rory and I are on our way back. We’ve got company.”

“How many?”

After he’d lifted his gaze to the rear view mirror, Dante narrowed his eyes. “Two, I think, but best to be prepared for a couple more.”

Bram snorted. “Piece of cake. I’ll roll out the welcome mat.”

Dante hung up then slipped the phone back into his jacket pocket. He glanced at Rory before returning his gaze to the road. “You doing okay?”

Rory nodded. “Do you think Dai sent them to finish what he started earlier? Are they here to kill me?”

The low growl that left Dante’s throat made Rory’s pulse spike. “They won’t get close enough to try, but no, they’re more likely here for me.
